«MERCATOR – Route des Merchands, Ville des Marchés en Méditerranée»

MERCATOR is an Interreg IIIB MEDOCC EU project, being led by Heritage Malta.

One of its main aims is to explore old trade networks, merchant cities and the common identity extant in the Mediterranean from the Etruscan period up to the 19th century and to valorize them through innovative methods. Partners' deliverables include the preparation of virtual and physical heritage trails situated in specific areas once linked to merchants and their trading activities. Information gathered for the heritage trails will supplement data for a Web Atlas accessible to the general public on the project's portal as well as for a paper Atlas which will be distributed free of charge in each partner country.

Anyone interested in the subject can access the MERCATOR portal and find project related information, such as proceedings of conferences and workshops, program of upcoming events, as well as educational games for children called MERCATOR Educational. Furthermore, a museums’ network has been set up so as to fortify working relationships between the partners and develop common practices in museum collections’ management in the Mediterranean region.

The 2 year project will end in June 2008. However, it is envisaged that the numerous benefits and working relationships formed in the course of MERCATOR will far outlast the project deadline.
